Don’t get fooled by its cute artwork, Made in Abyss is one of the most dramatic anime series ever.
I really need to thank Simply Kenna for mentioning this anime series in one of her videos… it literally just become number one above all 2892892 I have watched.
Don’t get fooled by how cute and innocent its characters look, Made in Abyss is probably one of the most wicked and deepest animes out there and is definitely made for adults (so don’t put your nieces or little sister watching this please).
A brilliant combination between adventure, fantasy and drama with only 13 episodes in the first season. Although it features chibi artwork which somehow reminds me of Miyazaki’s precious work, it becomes darker and darker throughout each episode.
The story evolves in a town called Orth, an innovative city developed around a massive underground crater known as Abyss. This natural phenomena extends down to the depths of the earth and gathers precious artifacts of a long gone civilization, which become pretty popular and coveted among the so-called Cave Riders.
Going down the Abyss is not an easy task tho. It’s composed by numerous layers where each one gathers different species and dangerous landscapes. One’s will and bravery to climb is not enough to survive, and that’s mainly because of its mysterious Curse.
The deeper you go into the Abyss, the more severe the physical pain becomes to return home.
“When a White Whistle reaches the sixth layer people call it their last dive”
Ascending becomes almost impossible for Cave Riders. To give you a clue of its instability , at the fourth layer, when one ascends, several orifices start bleeding at once becoming almost impossible to survive. When one reaches the sixth layer: loss of humanity.
The main character is Riko, a smart teenage girl who dreams to follow her mother’s footsteps as a legendary White Whistle and travel deep into the lowest levels of the Abyss to explore new gadgets and creatures. Yet since she is merely an inexperienced Red Whistle, she is only able to explore the first levels of the crater. And you should have stayed there gurl!
Gladly one day she meets this half-robot looking boy, who she later named Reg. A mysterious boy who seems to have risen from the depths of the Abyss that features incredible power and abilities and seems to be immune to its curses.
The story develops when these two characters join forces to explore the Abyss together so Riko meets her mother for the first time, and Reg finds out who he actually is and who created him.
What I particularly find incredible about this anime is: firstly how creative and unique the story of the abyss is and how its creatures and dangers become worse at each level. The chemistry between the two main characters which is very touching and beautiful to watch. And lastly, the mysteries and well-put together stories that are hidden in the dark.
I cried watching this anime. I felt scared watching this anime. I felt happiness watching this anime. Every emotion possible you will feel it in only 13 episodes of your precious life.
Right now the anime industry is becoming pretty saturated and there are plenty of unoriginal series and repetitive stories…finding one like Made in Abyss is basically a treasure believe me. Besides, the artwork and soundtrack are both amazing!
There’s no way it can get more exciting and terrifying than watching two children facing an horrible reality in the depths of the earth.
Hope you enjoyed this small Made in Abyss review, and make sure to give it a try. I’m quite sure you won’t be disappointed!
