I have to admit that lately I have not been following many anime series, only the usual stuff like Naruto and Dragon Ball, but I’m not to blame… is just that time seems to run so fast since I’ve been working, and I have to choose between social life, video games, series and anime. Hard life.
First of all let me start by saying that 2016 has been a great year. So many good anime was released this year and I wish I could thank everyone who is behind them in person. Also, I want you guys to know that I’m usually more on the adventure, fantasy side when it comes to anime but I also have a thing for shows like Tokyo Ghoul, Psycho Pass and Attack on Titan. The only thing you can’t expect on this list is overly cute and sports anime series. Sorry if that was what you were looking for!
P.s: This list is obviously based on my humble opinion. Enjoy!
Erased was by far one of the best anime series I’ve ever watched in my entire life. With a score of 8.65 on My Anime List, this show is about a man called Satoru that after experiencing a certain tragedy gets sent back on time due to a powerful phenomenon called “Revival“. The story starts when he is falsely charged with murder and gets back to the past once again, but this time around 18 years back. It’s an amazing story because he gets back to his childhood but now, with an adult mindset, he gets a clearer look of what was happening during that time. In the end everything was connected perfectly to the present. An amazing show with an amazing plot twist.
Mob Psycho 100
Mob Psycho 100 is about a teenager called Kageyama Shigeo, aka Mob, that owns outstanding psychic abilities. This guy is the average looking geek that can’t do sports or doesn’t care about studies at all. The only thing he aims is to get to know this girl and make friends. What truly caught my attention in this anime series, is the fact that we are dealing with an overpowered being that if somehow gets out of control can truly hurt the world around him. But the fact that he is such a nice guy and wants to achieve things by his own without using any ability, makes this anime so much more interesting to watch. My favorite character is his Mentor. If you watch the show you’ll get why!
Boku no Hero Academia
Boku no Hero Academia is given in a world where 80% of the humanity has “quirks”, newly discovered superpowers that range from the manipulation of elements to shape shifting. The main character is called Izuku Midoriya, a teenage boy that has always dreamed about being a super hero since he was a child. Unfortunately he was part of that 20% of normal human beings without any outstanding ability. Midoriya is a smart kid, he takes notes on every single hero and has a lot of knowledge about “quirks”. Luckily one day he encounters his number one Hero that has a unique ability that can be passed on to others. The story develops from there. If you like fantasy and adventure, this is the show for you!
Many of you may recognize this anime from the older series but this year, Berserk is back! The main character of this show is called Guts, and he sure has them. Branded by a demoniac entity, Guts is given a new destiny- to be haunted by demons the rest of his life. With his giant, made-of -steel sword he fights every single day to survive the dark horrors of earth. This anime is great because it’s given in an era dominated by Religious beliefs where Church has the ultimate power, and Guts, due to his dark past experiences, disbelieves God as a good being. An interesting show full with action and interesting content, that sometimes can be shocking. It took me a while to get used to the artwork of this anime but after you watch some episodes you won’t notice anymore.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
If you’re a fan of Attack on Titan you should watch this anime, it reminded me of it somehow. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress takes place in a world characterized by an impressive industrial revolution when a mysterious virus transforms people into horrific, human-flesh eaters that seem to never get enough of eating. Similar to zombies, when bitten by one of these creatures you get yourself infected by the virus and simultaneously get transformed. The only way to kill these monsters is to destroy their steel-coated hearts that an average gun cannot. An intense action series with a few plot twists to die for. I really enjoyed this anime but there’s one thing i’d like to point out, the last episode could have been better… It looked kind of “rushed”. Too many information, so little time. Apart from that, a great show!
Hope you enjoyed this “5 Must-Watch Anime Series of 2016” and if you have the chance to watch any of these, please let me know. I’d love to hear your opinion!
